STAR-CCM+ Validated for Missile Aerodynamics at Multiple Speed RegimesSTAR-CCM+ Validated for Missile Aerodynamics at Multiple Speed Regimes
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (LMMFC) needed to accurately predict drag for full missile configurations at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds. In their evaluation of STAR-CCM+, a joint validation study was undertaken on their Joint Common Missile (JCM) configuration. Surface wrapping and polyhedral meshing were employed to capture every detail of the geometry including fin mounts, straps, etc. The STAR-CCM+ results were verified to be within 3% of experimental data over the vast majority for the flight envelope. With this validation LMMFC standardized on STAR-CCM+ for drag critical analyses.
