Environmental Applications

The quality of the local atmospheric and hydrological environment has important short and long term implications for health and safety. STAR-CD enables strategies for avoidance and mitigation of problems to be explored that would be impractical to replicate physically; for example forest fires. In the hydrological arena, STAR-CD has been widely used to understand and mitigate phenomena such as water flows that cause structural damage and erosion.

In industry, STAR-CD can help to devise systems that minimize the production of chemical, NOx, smoke and thermal effluents. Then, downstream of the polluting event, it can be used to improve aftertreatment methods, and to predict the ultimate dispersion of pollution in to the environment.
