Deriving and supplying appropriate properties for complex structures has not been an easy task, but all that is about to change with the upcoming release of STAR-CCM+® v11.04, and the introduction of the multi-layer solid model for solids and shells. This feature allows for treating laminates made up from multiple layers of different materials as multicomponent solids.

In STAR-CCM+® v11.04, the highly regarded (extended) pom-pom adds to our list of viscoelastic constitutive models. Best suited for highly branched polymers like low density polyethylene (LDPE), it is able to most accurately predict viscoelastic responses for elongational flows commonly encountered in industrial processing.

Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the study of thermo-mechanical interactions of a fluid and a solid structure. FSI modeling for implant device design is taking on even greater importance in the current medical device environment, as producing better designs, faster, is imperative in this industry to reduce operating costs and introduce necessary potentially live-saving devices to market.

At this year's AIAA SCITECH annual conference, I sat down with the editors of Aerospace America to talk about the future of CFD analysis in the aerospace and defense market.  Predicting the future of CFD is the subject of intense debate. The recent publication of the NASA led CFD Vision 2030 study attempted to define the key challenges that face the industry over the next 15 years. In the report, the authors identified several obstacles to wider adoption of CFD in the aerospace industry:

So it’s finally official. I am delighted to announce that CD-adapco is now a part of the Siemens PLM family.

Back in January, when we first announced that Siemens PLM Software had entered into an agreement to purchase CD-adapco, legal regulations prevented us from talking in any detail about the deal and its consequences. Since the deal has now formally closed I am happy to take this opportunity to describe in detail the extent to which it will benefit customers of both CD-adapco and Siemens, as well as the PLM marketplace as a whole.

A key feature in the latest release of DARS, v3.02, is a new laminar flame speed library generator for the ECFM combustion models in STAR-CD/es-ice. This feature improves the accuracy of in-cylinder combustion simulations, allowing for better design of combustion systems to provide more performance with lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

It starts with an idea. Morphs into an obsession. Then comes the sweat. Practice. Tears. You hear the doubters. It’s an obstacle course. Persevere. Focus. The pressure is on. Determination. Your body and mind are beaten. It’s an arduous journey. Then you see it. The glorious finish line. The reward. The victory.

I’m talking about triathlons here. But I could very well be talking about something else with similar challenges – Startups. Triathlons are intensive and grueling and definitely not for the weak-hearted. Just like shepherding a startup company to success. This is probably why I’m always doffing my hat off in respect for Chris and Jon, brothers, triathletes and the founders of FLO Cycling.

The Paris Agreement, adopted by consensus by all of the 195 NFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) participating countries at the end of COP21 in December 2015, sets an ambitious target to limit global warming to well below 2°C. Although this agreement hasn’t entered into force yet, and will only do so if 55 countries that produce at least 55% of the world's GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions ratify, accept, approve or accede to the agreement when it opens for signature in April 2016, the very fact that such a consensus was reached shows a global willingness and readiness for change.

But change is always uncomfortable. The Paris Agreement will impact industries in numerous sectors and may push them to the limits of their financial, computational, human, and time resources: How will they be able to keep up with the innovation pace? How can we shift mindsets so industries prioritize environmental-friendly solutions over profitable solutions? And to which extent will business models need to change to be viable?
Using Engineering Simulation to Foster Innovation in the Fight Against Climate Change

For both undergraduate and graduate students, fluid mechanics courses can be challenging. In addition to learning theories and complex computations, many courses require a project or two that demonstrates the student's ability to create a simulation model. So how many professors and lecturers teach only theory and what percentage combine theory with an open-source or commercial CFD code?
