Use of STAR-CCM+ in University Teaching and Research

I use STAR-CCM+ in the teaching of CFD to 4th-year civil engineers. The students have a good background in engineering fluid mechanics, but no prior knowledge of CFD. An initial STAR-CCM+ exercise at the start of the module (for civil engineers: wind-loading) enables students to understand the basic principles of finite-volume CFD and immediately see a potential application. Because of the integrated geometric modelling, meshing, solving and post-processing, students pick up the software quickly and, encouraged by its ease of use, often voluntarily choose to apply it in other modules and projects. Later in the CFD module a more substantial exercise (a recent example included dispersion of pollution from building roofs) requires students to use more advanced features of the software, including field functions, reports and extraction of data. Students are not spoon-fed but are required to explore the available models and use the integrated help facilities; they are also encouraged to relate the practical work to the mathematical theory taught in class.
STAR-CCM+ has many features that make it ideal for undergraduate teaching. These include:
STAR-CCM+ is used by a number of undergraduate project students for their individual research projects. Because of the variety of possible applications the detailed collection of online tutorials is absolutely vital here. The integrated nature of STAR-CCM+ allows students to produce complete and consistent reports. It is a popular choice for more computationally-oriented students.
Additionally, STAR-CCM+ is used in postgraduate research. Many different areas of fluid mechanics are covered here, but it is vital to have a code that can deal with complex physics such as turbulence, heat transfer (all forms), free-surface flows, moving interfaces and body forces. The flexibility of scripting via field functions and the ability to important meshes and CAD representations from other software is also greatly appreciated here.
A Testimonial on the Use of STAR-CCM+ as a Teaching Tool

CFD software STAR-CCM+ is heavily used for teaching in the MSc and MEng programmes in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton. It is also used by a number of Part 3 students for their Individual Projects (IPs).
In Semester 1, I teach Applications of CFD for MSc and MEng students in Aero, Ship and Mech. The students are given an opportunity to choose STAR-CCM+ or other CFD packages for doing their tutorials and courseworks. STAR-CCM+ is warmly welcome by the students. In particular, STAR-CCM+ is highly welcome by our Race Car MSc programme students. Currently they choose only STAR-CCM+ for their module courseworks and Group Design Projects (GDPs). This is mainly because STAR-CCM+ provides easier tools (than other CFD packages) to generate mesh with a good quality for a complex geometry, e.g. for a whole race car. In summary, STAR-CCM+ provides an excellent opportunity for students’ learning in the University of Southampton.
