STAR-CCM+ has a broad range of options for aeroacoustics from steady state models to direct simulation using LES and far field propagation.
Aeroacoustics has come to the forefront of aircraft design with increasingly strict regulations around the world focusing on reduced aircraft noise during take-off and landing, in addition to comfortable noise limits during flight, leading to quieter commercial and military aircrafts.
  • Aero-acoustic analysis offers insight into the noise emissions due to turbulent flow and the interaction of aerodynamic forces with the aircraft structure. Depicted here is an LES analysis of a leading edge flap for aero-acoustics.
  • Transient aeroacoustics simulation on landing gear.

The prediction and analysis of noise generated by an aircraft is an important differentiator for aircraft designers and manufacturers, giving them the ability to analyze noise generation by different designs and modifications with a quick turnaround time. Aero-acoustic analysis offers insight into the noise emissions due to turbulent flow and the interaction of aerodynamic forces with the aircraft structure.

Numerical simulation is very capable of simulating the sources of aeroacoustic noise and STAR-CCM+ offers tools to extract the maximum value from the CFD process in Aeroacoustics CAE.

STAR-CCM+ offers both steady state and transient aeroacoustic calculations. The steady state analysis is used in the model optimization phase to calculate source locations and assess time-step requirements and mesh frequency cut-off estimation for an aeroacoustic calculation.

STAR-CCM+ offers the choice of DES, LES or Transient RANS for unsteady, time-accurate analysis for direct noise source capture with full compressibility options and 2nd order space and time discretization, the most efficient implementation among commercial transient solvers. Spectral Analysis – FFT at points and surface, auto & cross spectra coherence and phase and frequency & wave number fourier analysis, are also possible.

STAR-CCM+ captures the acoustic sources for propogation via the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FFT) model. Coupling to 3rd part propagation codes is also available: in particular, coupling with FFT, ACTRAN, LMS, Virtual.Lab.Acoustics, ESI, VA-One. Vibroacoustics calculations are also available through FVS inside STAR-CCM+ or exporting to SEA and FEA.

Some example application areas of STAR-CCM+ for aeroacoustic analysis are:

  • Resonance effects
  • Slat/cavity/flap
  • HVAC duct: dipole sources
  • Fan noise
  • Side-view mirror: external aero
