While ground vehicles are not most commonly associated with CFD usage, companies have been using CFD software more and more frequently in optimizing them. An excellent example is the civilian car industry using CFD for reducing automobile drag. In the civilian sector uses are even more diverse than this. Military vehicles are required to operate in sometimes harsh and extreme environments, such as the deserts of the Mideast. Thermal management of the car’s engine in such extreme environments are critical to any military application. In the same vein, cabin ventilation and vehicle electronics cooling become enormously important.
Another aspect where CFD is critical is exhaust transmission. Battle damage to a vehicle could leak exhaust into the cabin if is not properly routed in the vehicle. Also, in a battlefield that is becoming more and more technologically sophisticated, being able to hide or disperse your exhaust heat from the eyes of infrared scanners becomes very helpful.
One of the most visible parts of the defense industry centers on maritime fleets. From submarines to aircraft carriers, and running the entire gamut of ship classes in between, a wet navy provides indispensable utility to any military.
