Innovative methodologies for aero-vibro-acoustics simulation analyses
With the transport industry facing a continuing demand from customers and regulators to improve the aero-acoustic and vibro-acoustic performance of their products, reducing flow-induced noise has become more relevant than ever.
  • Sunroof buffeting and acoustical impedance of flexible structures : the noise associated with sunroof buffeting is caused by unsteady flow over the sunroof opening interacting with the roof panel and radiating sound to the vehicle occupants.
  • Aeroacoustics on HVAC system : vibro-acoustics and aero-acoustics can be combined to model complex aero-vibro-acoustics problems such as those encountered in HVAC systems.

One of the main challenges in addressing vibro-acoustic problems is the need for simulating very wide frequency and wave-number ranges. Engineers are continually faced with the challenge of modeling the sources of noise in these types of problems and the transmission of that noise to the interior of bodies through structural components.

CD-adapco is pioneering aero-vibro-acoustics methodologies, working with established experts and CFD-complementary software.

While STAR-CCM+ has demonstrated direct coupling to industry-leading acoustic tools, one class of aero-vibro-acoustic simulation is viable entirely within the STAR-CCM+ environment. It uses a Finite Volume Solid Stress solver implicitly integrated with a Finite Volume  flow solver to analyze acoustical damping effects of flexible materials. This approach lends itself very well to production level vibro-acoustic analysis where traditional fluid-structure interaction methods are often judged too time consuming and expensive. If one chooses, STAR-CCM+ also offers the ability for vibro-acoustics transmission via FEA.
