CD-adapco has had strong involvement in powertrain development for over 20 years and this has resulted in a streamlined and validated suite of tools (STAR-CCM+, STAR-CD and es-ice) all working together to efficiently and accurately perform powertrain simulations.

STAR-CD

Full physics capabilities available for efficiently simulating combustion, multiphase sprays and liquid films, heat and mass transfer, transient and turbulence effects and moving boundaries.

Expert Solutions-ice (es-ice)

Provides a dedicated environment inside STAR-CD to set-up and run ICE calculations, encapsulating the process and best-practices that CD-adapco has developed in over 30 years of industry experience, automating the set-up and running of the sophisticated moving-mesh technology required for engine simulation.

STAR-CCM+

CD-adapco’s multi-physics solver capable for modeling other Powertrain applications, including CHT.

The STAR-CD/es-ice suite is used by over 60 engine manufacturers and service providers for the following applications:

  • Fuel injectors, including gasoline or diesel primary spray break-up and liquid films
  • In-cylinder flow
  • Combustion
  • Coupling to chemical kinetic solvers, such as DARS and Chemkin
  • SI and CI engines, even when operating in HCCI or CAI mode
  • 1D-3D coupled & multi-cylinder simulations
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
  • Exhaust and aftertreatment

STAR-CCM+, along with STAR-CD, offers a streamlined process with flexibility, accuracy, quick turnaround time and closer integration of analysis of powertrain-related applications like turbochargers and SCR in the development process. SCR aftertreatment systems can be modeled in detail using CD-adapco solutions. All key phenomena – spray dynamics, impingement and wall film behavior, multicomponent liquid, gas phase and surface chemistry are included and validated extensively against experimental data. STAR-CCM+ is also extensively used by many turbocharger designers and manufacturers to ensure performance and reliability through numerical modeling.
