With nearly 80% of worldwide energy requirements being met by fossil fuels, combustion remains a key player in both the transportation and energy sectors. Consequently, gas turbine combustors are an integral part of combustion research and development. Simulation tools provide an ideal platform for the analysis and design of gas turbine combustors.

Whether it is the prediction of gas turbine performance under various operating conditions, the optimization of combustor design for performance efficiency or to minimize emissions, scalable and cost-effective simulations of the complex physics occurring within these combustors can reduce development time while improving output, longevity and efficiency.

This webcast presents and discusses highlights of the following aspects of numerical simulations of gas turbine combustors:

  • Steady and unsteady flow analysis using RANS and LES models
  • Gaseous and liquid fuels in combustors with advanced models for liquid fuel injection, break-up, evaporation and combustion
  • Emission models to predict NOx, CO, unburned hydrocarbons and soot which are critical for evaluating the performance characteristics of these systems
  • Detailed analysis of heat transfer involving convection, soot and radiation which directly impacts pollutant formation and material durability

The webcast features Dipl.-Ing. Anis Haj Ayed of B&B-AGEMA as a guest presenter. He discusses how B&B-AGEMA uses simulation to design and develop cleaner, more efficient and reliable gas turbine engines.

In this presentation, they will share some of their turbomachinery R&D work, including examples of how they have validated CHT in STAR-CCM+® and used it to improve the cooling techniques of several gas turbines.
