STAR-Cast: Casting Simulation Software from Access e.V. and CD-adapco at GIFA 2011.

London and New York. June 14, 2011

CD-adapco and its development partner Access e.V. jointly announced the release of version 1.08 of their industrial casting simulation system STAR-Cast in March 2011.

Among the many attributes that STAR-Cast provides are ease-of- use and power. STAR-Cast leverages the technology deployed in CD-adapco’s STAR-CCM+ and STAR-CD high-end CFD solutions. For its part Access e.V. brings to STAR-Cast deep expertise in metallurgy and casting processes, including simulating the internal microstructures of materials. CD-adapco and Access e.V. will be available with additional STAR-Cast information in Hall 11, Stand G28 at GIFA 2011, June 28 - July 02 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The multi-level, base to sublime combination of expertise gives designers, toolmakers, and foundry personnel a high-end, yet easy-to-use toolset for the analysis of gravity casting, tilt-pour casting, low-pressure die casting, centrifugal casting and Bridgman casting.

Many casting-specific features make it possible to accurately account for special initial and boundary  conditions, like e.g. low gas pressure (vacuum casting), permeable mould (gas escape through sand or small slots), moving boundaries (pouring, centrifugal casting). Melt flow calculation is coupled with both a solidification model and a heat transfer model at metal-mould interfaces. A thermo-mechanical module allows accurate prediction of heat flow, dimensional stability, castings. STAR-Cast also exclusively provides an interface to the microstructure evolution Software MICRESS. For material data input, STAR-Cast interfaces the material database STAR-Cast.mat. Optionally radiative heat exchange on mould surfaces can be predicted using an accurate 3D radiation model. STAR-Cast interfaces with powerful mesh generation tools provided by CD-adapco. For investment casting simulation STAR-Cast.shell residual stresses and mechanical properties of generates virtual shell moulds as obtained in a real dipping process.

Results are visualized using STAR-Cast.view, which can also be installed in a distributed working environment for concurrent engineering applications. The new pre-processing tool STAR-Cast.pre – (currently under construction) will allow an easy set-up of casting simulations. In particular, one application based on a PRO/Engineer design will demonstrate the straightforward workflow from CAD to casting simulation with STAR-Cast. A large variety of casting processes has already been simulated using STAR-Cast, demonstrating the versatility of this integrative casting process development tool; some of these will be presented at GIFA.
