CD-adapco Academic STAR Simulation Contest Winner Announced

The CD-adapco Global Academic Program congratulates Alex Haldane for winning the CD-adapco Academic STAR Simulation Contest! Alex’s submission, STAR-CCM+ LES Simulation of Poppet Valve Using Morphing Mesh and Dynamic Remeshing, was chosen from a number of videos submitted by academics from all around the world. 

Alex recently finished his third year of the four year Mechanical Engineering MEng course at the University of Warwick in the UK. As top prize winner, Alex’s video will be featured on the main page of the CD-adapco website along with winning an iPad Mini and a CD-adapco Global Academic Program T-shirt. 

Alex’s project compared the performance of a recently patented helical valve to a conventional valve with CFD using the LES turbulence Model. The two cases used STAR-CCM+ as the CFD package and had a combined run time of 240 hours on a Linux cluster. The Large Eddy Simulation model was chosen due to LES having a reduced calculation time compared to other models whilst reproducing accurate flow characteristics, with cycle-to-cycle variation levels being similar to experimental data. 

The engine geometry was based on a Ducati 999R as it has the same sized valves as the test helical valves produced. Both cases used a poppet valve for the exhaust in order to maintain constant Internal Exhaust Gas Recirculation (IEGR). If the IEGR varies between cases this leads to an unfair comparison between different intake valves. 

The project was validated by using STAR-CCM+ to recreate experimental data on laminar flow around a U-bend, square cross section duct. The validation produced accurate results matching the experimental data closely. 

The biggest success of this project was managing to simulate unsteady, moving geometry simulations with morphing mesh and developing dynamic remeshing for STAR-CCM+. Dynamic Meshing automatically remeshes the case when required. Macros written by Alex were used to facilitate a dynamic remeshing process within the simulation. 

Kostas Karantonis, CD-adapco Academic Program Manager – UK, caught up with Alex to congratulate him on the win and to learn more about him and his applied use of STAR-CCM+. Below are Alex’s comments: 

1. What prompted you to enter the CD-adapco Academic Simulation Contest? 

I had just handed in my third year project and after the relief of months of hard work being finished I remembered seeing various CD-adapco contests online. I decided I may as well submit my project, as I had spent so long working on it, with no expectation of actually being chosen. 

2. How long have you been a member of the CD-adapco academic community? 

In March 2013, I decided to teach myself how to use STAR-CCM+ in my second year after seeing some of my older team-mates in Warwick Racing, our university's Formula Student team, using the software. I began by using the software in the engineering computer rooms, fortunately my academic tutor ran a 4th year module introducing CFD and the software, showing me how to access the tutorials for that module. 

After a few weeks my tutor, Dr. Chung, put me in contact with Konstantinos Karantonis, the Academic Program Manager at CD-adapco. I was then given a Power-On-Demand license so I could carry out simulations on my own machine at home. 

This was a huge help as it allowed me to run simulations whilst I was away from the computer and also overnight. 

3. How has the CD-adapco Global Academic Program (GAP) helped you? 

Being given an individual student license for STAR-CCM+ gave me the right tools to produce an ambitious study which gave me one of my highest academic marks so far on my degree. The Knowledge Base and How-To-Videos allowed me to quickly and easily begin the learning process for the software, giving me a good starting foundation for my project. 

4. What was your reaction when you learned you were named the contest winner? 

When I learned I had been named the contest winner I was fairly shocked, I never expected my simulation to be chosen amongst all the other applicants, which I'm sure were very impressive entries. When I had read the email to the point of being told I'd be featured on the main-page of the CD-adapco website, that was enough to get me to stop reading and immediately tell my Formula Student team mates sitting next to me that I had won. It took me a further 5 minutes for my excitement to die down before I re-read the email and noticed I was being given an iPad and a CD-adapco T-shirt!
