Spray drying has been used for more than a century, and from the outside, can seem to be a rather simple process. However, in contrast to the deceptive first appearance, the physical processes found inside a spray dryer are far from trivial and, as yet, are not fully understood. Therefore the spray drying process is still receiving active attention both from academia and industry.
As an equipment supplier, Tetra Pak expends considerable effort to improve their spray dryers, enabling customers to make better powders at lower cost. CFD was recognised as the key tool to identify and test these improvements and analyze potential developments in an economically feasible way.
This presentation will address some of the basic modeling choices that were faced and some of the challenges that lay ahead.
