Hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles are a zero emission alternative to conventional gasoline or diesel vehicles. Their number is expected to rise significantly in the next few years. Hydrogen fueling is as fast as gasoline fueling (3 minutes). However, refueling process is challenging due to the high gas pressure (70 MPa), high velocities and varying ambient conditions.
Our presentation will demonstrate how STAR-CCM+ was used to optimize the fueling process and define the world wide fueling standard SAE J2601. Our model is able to predict mass flow, pressure and temperature over time and to standardize the requirements for car manufacturers and hydrogen fueling station providers.
