CD-adapco Flowing Ahead at SAE 2004

March 5, 2004

The SAE 2004 World Congress will see many new CAE solutions being exhibited by CD-adapco.

STAR-CD
Firstly, the Group will demonstrate the latest version of its CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code STAR-CD, which has enhanced capability for simulating the wide range of flow processes in and around vehicles including external aerodynamics, underhood thermal management, engine and aftertreatment processes, climate control and more. STAR-CD’s pre-/post-processor has new modeling capabilities driven from GUI panels for ease-of-use. CAD interfaces are available for all major CAD systems, eliminating the need for expensive CAD seats. Advanced automeshing, surface cleaning and state-of-the-art surface wrapping tools, previously sold as optional extras, are now included in the STAR-CD bundle. Surface wrapping in particular, is now seen as the key to reducing overall turnaround time in many design optimization scenarios.

STAR-CCM+
The company’s next generation CFD code STAR-CCM+, which uses “computational continuum mechanics” methodology will also be demonstrated. This has the ability to achieve fast solutions on arbitrary polyhedral meshes, and provides object-oriented architecture, enhanced multiphysics and state-of-the-art coupled solver technology.

CAD-integration
CD-adapco is also addressing demand for CAD integrated CFD solutions by developing a range of new capabilities and options for its CFD codes STAR-CD and Comet. A choice of CAD-integrated options is now included ‘by default’. The STAR-Design option, for users without a CAD system, offers a robust built-in Parasolid solid-modeling kernel and fast meshing tools, and unlike most commercial CAD systems, it is available on all platforms including Unix, Linux and Windows. For users that already have a CAD system, CAD-integrated versions of STAR-CD are available for Pro/ENGINEER, CATIA V5, Unigraphics NX and SolidWorks. All these new options provide full upstream and downstream CAD associativity within each CAD system’s graphical user interface, facilitating parametric design optimization within enterprise wide environments.

Expert Systems
The basic capabilities of STAR-CD make it a very reliable, accurate, and versatile CFD tool. However, when it comes to analyzing complex industrial problems, experience and specialized know-how are also required. With this in mind CD-adapco offers a series of knowledge-based expert systems, which help solve complex engineering problems and address all aspects of the design process from CAD to post-processing. These are collectively known as es-solutions and aim to produce high quality results in short turnaround times using application specific best practices.

One of the first systems to tackle the complex world of IC engine simulation is es-ice. The latest release includes additional functionality permitting many key tasks. Easy sector modeling for rapid closed cycle calculations typically performed for diesel engines is possible, and calculations for multi-cylinder models including intake and exhaust manifolds can be completed. Nearly 40 companies including major automotive companies, Audi, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Ford and Renault, are already using es-ice to simulate complex in-cylinder flow processes, enabling them to reduce their turnaround times, reduce costs and improve the efficiency and quality of their reciprocating IC engines.

es-pemfc is a new pre-and post-processing tool which has been developed to help simulation and analysis of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). Solutions are calculated with STAR-CD and the University of South Carolina’s electrochemistry subroutines. Typical issues that can be handled include cooling channel design, water management to optimize humidity and avoid flooding, design and operation with safe pressure balance across the membrane, and more.

Also recently released, is the passenger compartment tool es-pass, an expert system for solving passenger compartment airflow. es-pass simulations provide better understanding of the flow and heat transfer processes affecting de-misting, de-icing and passenger thermal comfort.

For aerodynamicists requiring accurate and efficient aerodynamic simulation of highly complex flows encountered around the vehicle, CD-adapco has developed es-aero. It also offers the benefits of speed, accuracy and the ability to examine wind noise or water management. Starting from a good CAD surface, es-aero provides an easy to use GUI to guide the user through geometry import, surface preparation, template generation, mesh generation, run set up, and post-processing.

When simulating the complex flow and heat transfer processes encountered when dealing with underhood thermal management, the highly flexible CAD mesh handling capabilities of STAR-CD and es-uhood can be used. Starting from CAD data made up of hundreds of files, a meaningful CFD model can be quickly assembled within days. Other benefits are that is has fast radiation and fan/heat exchanger modeling capabilities.

For simulating the heat transfer and chemical reactions that occur inside the catalytic converter, the most basic method is based on the porous media type equivalent continuum approach. A more accurate and detailed approach, is used in CD-adapco’s es-aftertreatment system, involving the simulation of representative monolith channels. This powerful method enables the processes involved to be captured much more accurately.

Whatever the required CAE solution, CD-adapco is responding to client demand. Steve MacDonald, President of CD-adapco, says, “Our mission is to establish a long term relationship with our Industrial Partners by becoming their preferred Computer-Aided Engineering Solution provider. Our software and engineering services can handle flow, thermal and stress analysis, acoustics, chemistry, either singly or in combination, tightly or loosely coupled. The solutions can range from consulting on a specific problem to the supply of software to enable the customer to solve the problem themselves, and combinations between these extremes. We look forward to meeting you at SAE 2004”.
