es-ice, CFD for IC engine modeling

September marked the official release of CD-adapco’s IC engine expert system tool es-ice Version 1.02. es-ice is the successor and an extension of ProICE (available since 1997), retaining all of its functionality with many new additional capabilities.

es-ice is based on the automatic generation of a parameterized template. The template can be easily altered for the specific engine configuration. This template is then either trimmed or mapped to the surface geometry. Topologies for engine configurations from 0 to 5 valves per cylinder can be generated and each valve can move independently.

es-ice prepares all of the necessary files for the STAR-CD analysis. Running in conjunction with STAR-CD, es-ice then provides fully automated mesh motion. es-ice is also compatible with STAR-HPC and can automatically generate an optimized domain decomposition. This permits rapid solutions for large problems.

Additional functionality permits many key tasks. Easy sector modeling for rapid closed cycle calculations typically performed for Diesel engines is possible, and calculations for multi-cylinder models including intake and exhaust manifolds can be completed.
