CATIA V5 Environment for STAR-CD and Comet

In addition to the CATIA V5 native reader available with our advanced pre-processing tools, STAR-CD and Comet, already integrated into Pro/ENGINEER and SolidWorks, are being integrated within CATIA V5 from Dassault Systemes. It will be possible to take models built in CATIA V5 and run a full CFD analysis from within the familiar CAD environment, totally removing the need to learn a new interface.

Features of the CATIA V5 environment

  • Ability to work on both parts and assemblies
  • Integration extends the native CAD GUI so selections, options, dialogs etc. work the exact same way the user is familiar with
  • Settings are applied directly to the CAD entities (faces, parts etc). If the CAD model changes, the settings move with the CAD
  • Settings are saved in the model file

What STAR-CD does

  • Tackles flow including incompressible or compressible, laminar or turbulent and heat transfer
  • Allows for multiple parts for calculations involving multiple fluids and solids
  • Heat transfer within solids
  • Simulates porous media within fluids to model flow resistances e.g. filters and catalysts
  • Offers a rotating fluid model for pumps and fans
  • Chemical species transport
  • Includes a fully automatic tetrahedral mesher with near boundary prism layers to capture wall effects
  • Provides extensive visualization and reporting tools

No glass ceiling

The integration adds functionality to the standard capabilities of the STAR-CD and Comet codes, meaning that if more demanding CFD is required, it is possible to revert to and exploit their maximum power at anytime. With the journaling and replay functions, any activities done outside the integration are recorded, and then can be replayed within the integration for different design configurations. For example, combustion simulations can be repeated while varying the geometry.

STAR-CD and Comet for CATIA V5 are specifically designed to encourage and quickly assess upfront “what-if” design changes. In both cases, tight integration of CFD within the CATIA V5 environment enables easier parametric design studies to be carried out with enhanced automation and bi-directional associativity between CAD and CFD models.
