The flow of molten steel and the behavior of non-metallic inclusions inside the 6-Strand Tundish at Georgsmarienhütte GmbH were investigated.
Considering that water models are generally accepted in supporting validation of CFD simulations, a scaled model of the Tundish was built. The water flow and the non-metallic inclusions behavior are compared with CFD simulation results. A VOF simulation with extreme density ratio (liquid water, air) was performed. The Eulerian Multiphase model and the Volume of Fluid model were implemented to calculate the behavior of water and air. The Lagrangian Multiphase model was used to simulate four different types of particles. A transient calculation was performed for twenty minutes of solution time. Five times an injection of about 1000 non-metallic inclusions was randomly performed at the ladle shroud. Particle size and density were chosen according to experimental data. Temperature of the liquid phases was 20 °C. Physical properties such as viscosity, density, etc. were chosen according to data included in STAR-CCM+. The simulated distribution of the non-metallic inclusions at the six submerged entry nozzles was compared with experimental results.
The results of the comparison show a high degree of sensitivity to size and density of the particles relating to the distribution within the water-phase.
