Active Space Technologies GmbH is performing a simulation of a building subject to conjugate heat transfer involving radiation, convection, conduction and mass transfer.
The building is located in a village in southern Spain. The scope of the project is to analyze the effect of nano-materials added to paint for external walls, as well as to tile facades in order to improve the reflective properties of the building at near-infrared wavelengths. Additionally, the the aim is to obtain energy savings for the buildings’ cooling system.
In order to perform this simulation a 3D model of the building was developed both, in CAD software and in STAR-CCM+ CAD tools. Material properties such as walls, windows, doors, roofs etc. were inserted. A sun path model was created with numerical tools and afterwards imported into STAR-CCM+. Finally, boundary conditions from weather forecasts were also integrated in the simulation.
Currently inner and outer temperatures from walls, windows, the roof etc. as well as different weather conditions throughout day and night and different periods of the year are monitored and plotted graphically. Based on this simulation a model of a building will be constructed in 2012. Several temperature sensors will be installed to evaluate the thermal performance of the building and to be able to compare the experimental data with the simulation.
