Presented at the STAR Global Conference 2012
A methodology will be presented which allows the prediction of the accumulated effects of environmental impacts such as solar radiation, temperature and humidity on components of a given material, geometrical, geographical and environmental configuration as well as exposure time.
The procedure relies upon simulation using STAR-CCM+ to obtain the exact micro climate around the component. All relevant physical phenomena such as solar and heat radiation, shadowing, conduction and convection are taken into account.
In order to simulate the overall aging over a defined period of time, the influence of all possible situations and weather conditions that the component experiences must be known. An innovative approach is proposed to reduce the complexity of this numerical task by choosing a number of characteristic scenarios with regard to sun position and climate conditions and by integrating their contribution over time. Finally, given a dose-effect relationship for a specific material, the aging of the component can be calculated and visualized so that critical points can be identified in advance.
The method was validated for a polymeric component exposed in a virtual instrument panel dashboard box (IPDP-box) in Arizona, USA. An important future application of CFD aging is the simulation of a car cabin interior.
