STAR-CCM+ enables you to model Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI), the study of the interaction of a structure with the surrounding fluid, in a single package with its unique built-in finite volume stress capability. In addition with STAR-CCM+ you can model tightly coupled FSI problems, through co-simulation with Abaqus FEA.

FSI is traditionally done by coupling CFD to a FEA code.  This coupling could be tight or loose and STAR-CCM+  has the capabilities to perform either types of coupling with or without using complementary FEA software.  Tight coupling is one where results are passed at a time-step/inner iteration level (co-simulation) while loose coupling is one where results are passed through files (mapping).  When components deform and change shape, STAR-CCM+ provides mesh morphing tools to represent them accurately.

STAR-CCM+ has a fully integrated Finite-Volume Stress solver with no need for mapping or co-simulation. STAR-CCM+ also provides a way to do fully coupled FSI with SIMULIA Abaqus Unified FEA. 

FSI applications include wing flutter, engine cooling, fuel tank sloshing, hydroplaning, blade cooling, chip warpage, wind turbine blades, blood circulatory & respiratory applications, and marine slamming.
