The optimization of marine vessels requires that the interaction between
various ship components and floating positions is taken into account.
These interactions make experimental optimization costly and time
consuming, often with poor repeatability, or a limited number of data points.
With recent developments in computer technology and numerical methods,
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation emerges as the more
suitable approach. In this article, we present the results of several validation
studies, which include both simulations and experiments and explore the
ability of CFD to predict not only the trends, but also quantitative variation in
resistance due to design changes.
