Heat sinks have long been a key component of the thermal management strategy of electronic components and they will continue to be used for the foreseeable future. The goal in any heat sink selection process is providing adequate heat transfer at a minimum cost in the available space envelope and often minimizing the mass of the heat sink. Achieving this goal is valuable for both the heat sink manufacturer and the system designer, but the large number of variables that need to be investigated can make it difficult to accomplish.
Physical testing of the range of heat sink variations takes both too long and costs too much for an optimization process. Virtual testing, however, is wonderfully suited to the process.
This webcast demonstrates the range of tools in STAR-CCM+ that allow a heat sink or system designer to quickly and efficiently optimize their components regardless of their shape or usage. Attendees learn how the use of the adjoint solver and Optimate in STAR-CCM+ allows investigation and optimization for both test environments and in-situ usage.
